My Story:
My story is quite a long one – but it’s made me into who I am today. I’ve lived with type one for 19 years now, and I first got started in advocacy and public speaking when I was 10 years old with my local American Diabetes Association. In 2014, I became the ADA’s National Youth Advocate where I spent the year traveling the US where I was able to partake in speeches, galas, fundraisers, T1D camps, national committee meetings, and televised events. That year taught me how much using our voice to share our opinions, experiences, and concerns matters. The diabetic community is such an amazing place and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it!
Nowadays, I balance life, school, advocacy, and diabetes. I have also become a teen advocate for JDRF and lead events for pre-teens and teenagers living with type one diabetes in my community. I work hard to show others what life with diabetes looks like and to educate those who may not know much about it.
Advocacy allows me to preserve and transcend while living with diabetes. I am passionate about public speaking and raising diabetes awareness through so many different avenues. In today’s time, we truly have the gift of reaching thousands of people so easily, and I think it’s amazing that we can use social media to help educate others on what living healthy and meaningful lives with diabetes is like. The diabetic community is unlike any community – it is so welcoming and bright of amazing people who each bring something unique to the table, and I think there’s nothing more empowering than surrounding yourself with people who want to help others just as much as you do!
I always say, together we’ll go from type one to type none and I’ll work hard to do my part every day to get there. Until then, we’ll keep living and uplifting one another!
