My Story:
I’m a 50 yr old woman who has had type 1 diabetes since age 7. My blood sugar is a roller coaster, especially with menopause. I had to quit working as a registered nurse to care for my disabled husband of 33 years and my 77 yr old mentally handicapped aunt. I don’t want to risk their health with COVID19 being rampant so I’m usually alone when going to the grocery store. It would be so nice just to be able to go without worrying about the inevitable low!!
My Health Details
Type of Diabetes:Type 1
Low blood sugar instances per week:6+ Instances
Daily number of times checking blood sugar:7+ times/day
Managing Diabetes with:DEXCOM G6 AND TANDEM T-SLIMX2 INSULIN PUMP
What age were you diagnosed with diabetes?6-10
How long does it typically take you to come up when you are low?1-2 hours
Do you have a diabetic hero that you look up to? If so, who and why?
I suppose it would be my daddy. He passed away at age 73 and ironically not from his type 1 diabetes. He was 17 when they discovered he had type 1, in 1956. How he managed to not only survive but successfully manage his diabetes before the advances is nothing short of amazing.
What is your biggest challenge with diabetes?
My biggest challenge is going low while I’m out alone.
What have you learned from your experiences with diabetes?
I’ve learned that diabetes should never hold you back from attaining your dreams. I played sports in high school (basketball and softball), became a darned good pediatric nurse and had a baby.
Oh and if you can, get an insulin pump!!! I spent so so many years saying I don’t need that when in reality, it only makes diabetic life easier!!!
