My Story:
I was misdiagnosed in 2005 with T2.5d and all those years on insulin shots, (Novolog & Lantus) I rarely had my numbers anywhere near controlled. I was told I basically had T2, and didn’t think it was a big deal. Didn’t change my diet, gained weight up to nearly 600lbs. I didn’t leave the apt for 7 years and only saw my emotionally abusive husband. In 2016, I called a women’s DV shelter and ran from my entire life. In 2017, a wonderful individual moved in with me. A few months later we moved to a new state, and with new insurance I was encouraged to see an Endo for the first time since 2005. She tested my blood and called me to tell me I have Adult onset T1d…(LADA). Because of her amazing care and properly educating me about this illness, I have had things under control (well, as much as T1d can be controlled). I became a Podder in June 2018, and started using Dex G5 a month ago. I am vigilant about my health, have lost 260lbs on my own (no bariatric surgery) and my amazing partner is a huge support for me….being a 5 star Cordon-Bleu trained chef helps!
So, I’m a whole new person now! Happy, still disabled, though quite active and enjoying our new house in the country; my health seems to be my only stressor, but therapy helps me talk about the weariness and frustration of diabetes: never a day off, never a solid night’s sleep, never the same day twice in a row… but these devices help keep me alive and I’m so thankful!
Unfortunately, a decade plus of poorly managed hyperglycemia has taken its toll and I have severe neuropathy, it’s a lesson learned but I’m not bitter… Like all of us, I AM A FIGHTER! I will keep on fighting until something kills me, but it WON’T be diabetes. I will fight until there’s a cure…I.Will.Win. ☆
